February 11 (2-1-1 Day) Celebrates Critical 211 Call Service and Highlights Local Need
February 11th (2/11) is National 211 Day — an annual observance celebrating the three-digit, 24/7 help resource (2-1-1) that connects people across the U.S. and Canada with local health and human services free of charge. This vital service supports neighbors in need throughout Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties.
In the 2024 211 Impact Survey, the 211 network responded to 16.8 million requests for help nationwide, resulting in more than 18 million hyperlocal referrals for assistance — an average of 32 calls, chats, or texts per minute.
Locally, 211 continues to be a critical resource for residents facing immediate and long-term challenges. Over the past year, 211 locally handled 12,642 calls throughout our three-county area. Thousands of residents connected with 211 for assistance with a wide range of needs including basic living supports, health care, housing stability, and more.

Key Facts About 211
211 is free, confidential, and available 24/7 to everyone.
It is accessible in over 180 languages.
Trained specialists provide empathetic, non-judgmental support, connecting individuals and families with multiple resources, not just for the one issue they called about.
“211 is an unmatched, critical service that provides connection and support to those who are struggling,” said Anna Murphy, President & CEO of United Way of Southwest Michigan. “On 211 Day, we express appreciation for the dedicated specialists who help neighbors in our community — and celebrate this lifeline that so many rely on every day.”
The 211 system was established in 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission as a simple way to reach health and human services information. Today, 211 serves as a source of help and hope in communities throughout the United States and Canada.
While 211 is a resource available year-round, it is especially valuable during times of disaster — such as floods or tornadoes — by providing accurate, vetted information and ensuring 911 services remain available for life-threatening emergencies. 211 also played a key role in supporting residents during local emergencies like the Benton Harbor water crisis.
During 211 Day and beyond, United Way of Southwest Michigan encourages residents in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties to:
Call, text, or chat 211 when they or someone they know needs help
Share information about 211 with neighbors, family, and friends
Advocate with local policymakers for continued and strengthened support of 211 services
Donate to United Way of Southwest Michigan so vital services like 211 continue to help local residents in our area
