Communication and collaboration
What Participants Will Do Design and lead real-world projects that foster social connections and improve neighborhood conditions. Examples of these community-driven initiatives include organizing a neighborhood clean-up
committee, establishing a community garden, forming a safety and watch team, or creating a tool-sharing cooperative.
Why the Academy Matters The program was inspired by local voices and modeled after San Diego’s successful Resident Leadership Academy. Berrien County residents expressed a need for safer spaces, healthier food options, and stronger community ties. The Academy acts as a catalyst, offering structure, mentorship, and a space to gather, organize, and lead.
“Community transformation starts at the neighborhood level, fueled by everyday people looking to make a difference,” said Program Facilitator Ashley Hines. “The Academy bridges the gap between their ideas and aspirations, and the education and resources needed to ultimately serve as changemakers. I’m excited to connect with residents through the Community Leadership Academy, to help them launch their ideas into action.”
Program Support and Funding This program is made possible through funding from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, awarded to United Way of Southwest Michigan. Be Healthy Berrien, a collective impact initiative anchored by United Way, proudly leads the Academy in partnership with Corewell Health, recognizing its vital role in building a healthier, more connected community.
