Tim Smith
CEO, Life Treatment Centers
What inspired you to become a part of United Way?
I have spent my entire career in non-profit/human services serving the most vulnerable people in our community. When I was approached to serve on UWSM’s Board, I jumped at the opportunity.
Why do you serve on the board?
That’s very simple. As the saying goes, “When everybody does better, everybody does better.” I believe that’s true.
What is your leadership philosophy?
Understand who you are and who you are not. Surround yourself with exceptional talent and get the heck out of their way.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience?
During high school I volunteered at an assisted living community. I met a widowed World War II veteran who really enjoyed telling me stories about his youth and his military service. He spent hours telling me his stories, which at the time bored me to death, but I listened. Years later I came to the realization that he was lonely and all he really wanted was human connection. I am privileged to have been there with him.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My Mom and Dad, hands down. They modeled for my brother and me how to treat people, the rewards of hard work, and importance of integrity.
What talent would you most like to have?
I wish I could play the piano.
