Why did you choose to serve on the United Way of Southwest Michigan board? I've chosen to serve on the United Way of Southwest Michigan board for a few key reasons. Firstly, I'm deeply committed to this community. I grew up in Southwest Michigan, and after being away for about two decades, I've returned to make it my home again. Secondly, United Way's mission to create a united and resilient community resonates strongly with me, particularly the goal of helping those who might fall between the cracks in social services.
What does our mission mean to you? To me, the mission – is about much more than just providing basic needs. It means actively building a better Southwest Michigan for everyone. It's about ensuring that people don't just survive, but that they genuinely feel a sense of belonging and have real opportunities for growth. When we address the gaps that might prevent this, we foster that sense of belonging and create a truly unified community. And when individuals feel secure and empowered to grow, the entire community becomes more resilient and ultimately thrives.
What is one local cause or community issue that you are especially passionate about, and why? One local cause I'm especially passionate about is ensuring access to justice for everyone, which is why I'm very supportive of Legal Aid of Western Michigan and their office here in St. Joseph. They provide crucial civil legal services to individuals and families who couldn't otherwise afford representation.
When you're not working or volunteering, what’s a favorite hobby or activity you enjoy? Lately, when I'm not working or volunteering, I'm spending time with my ten- and six-year-old. I also enjoy doing home renovations and stealing away for an occasional nap.
