What inspired you to become a part of United Way?
After 15 years of hearing about the benefits UW provided, I was asked to step forward and help with the Whirlpool campaign. After this experience, I was hooked. I learned even more how much UW does to help the needs of our local community and saw opportunities to step up and help. Seeing the impact first hand on people's faces inspires me to keep volunteering in many different way and events.
Why do you serve on the board?
Because I could not say no to Anna. That said, I am honored to be asked and have the ability to lead the impact committee as we look for the best ways to serve the community needs. As a board member, it is also rewarding to provide stewardship over the funds that others have trusted UW with.
What is your leadership philosophy?
When it comes to leadership, there are many aspects to consider, but for me, leading by example has always been near and dear. If I am going to ask others to give their heart & mind, time, or treasure, I should be giving mine first.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience?
All of my volunteer experiences are memorable, I can remember participating in days of caring 20 years ago where we built handicap ramps or divided rooms/rebuilt baths. My most memorable ones were cooking Sunday breakfast at the homeless shelter for men with my son, Cole. Each month we join with one other to create a group of three to make breakfast and serve the residents of the shelter. Having that time together to serve others and get to know their stories and provide them (and us) a jump start to the week is priceless.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My heroes in real life are all those who serve others, especially our military service people.
What is your most treasured possession?
As a possession, I would have to say my truck is my most treasured. I am constantly using it to haul stuff and many times this is to help others. Whether it be helping someone move into a home, deliver an appliance, bring a mattress to someone, or just load up with food or supplies, having my truck allows me to help others achieve their task.
