United Way of Southwest Michigan is proud to partner with Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency to provide free tax preparation for low-income working families in Berrien or Cass counties.

The VITA Program offers free tax help to people who make $54,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Volunteers Needed

Do you want to give families financial peace of mind or help strengthen the local economy? Become a VITA volunteer! This program helps low income working families in your community by preparing their taxes, bringing financial stability to those that need it most. The VITA program uses two kinds of volunteers. Greeters help with the intake process and tax preparers complete the actual tax returns.  We need a large pool of both to make the program successful.

Volunteer tax preparers are asked to complete approximately 15 hours of training and commit to preparing taxes 2-4 times a month. Each tax preparation date requires a 3-5 hour time commitment. Free training is provided for all volunteers and tax preparers will become IRS certified. Greeters will receive a training date after expressing interest in volunteering. Tax training is provided in January, and is offered through threein-person classes, self-directed online modules, or a combination of both.
