“Julie” moved to the area permanently after meeting her boyfriend here. Her plan was to live happily ever after. Instead, she found herself pregnant, penniless and deserted. Young and not sure what to do, she turned to the Nurse Family Partnership program through the Berrien County Health Department.
A visiting nurse worked with her throughout her pregnancy to make sure she had a healthy baby and to teach her developmental milestones to keep her baby boy growing strong. But the help didn’t end with the child’s physical health. A longer-term plan to learn life-skills that will forever help Julie and her son was put in place.
Julie found a job and rode her bicycle or walked a long distance to work every day. Finally, she was able to buy a used car. It has taken time, but thanks to you, United Way and the Nurse Family Partnership, Julie is now living independently and confident in her abilities to take care of herself, her son and her home.
