When Margaret’s 93-year-old husband Richard was diagnosed with cancer, she just wasn’t sure if she would be able to give him the care he needed. You, United Way and the Berrien County Cancer Services were there to help.

A visiting nurse came to their home to do a blood draw every week or two weeks depending on the need. For Margaret, it was a relief to not have to make the trip to the doctor each week for the test and medication if necessary.

But the help goes beyond medical needs. When Richard lost the use of his right leg, he needed to be hospitalized. The nurse came to their home and helped Margaret get her husband dressed and ready for the ambulance ride and then cleaned the snow from her car so she could drive to the hospital behind the ambulance.

“There aren’t enough words to let you know how much good they do,” Margaret said. “I don’t know how we could have managed without their help.”
